Nestled in the northern part of Sonoma County in the heart of the Russian River Valley, the Raven Haus is surrounded by towering redwoods and steeped in history, built all the way back in 1925. From the moment you arrive, it feels like the world has slowed down entirely.

🍽️ Right Next Door

Pulling up to the cabin, you pass the Rio Nido Lodge and Roadhouse, where you can enjoy local food and live entertainment on weekends. It is a short walk from the cabin so you never have to drive anywhere, yet the setting still feels completely secluded and wonderfully unplugged.

Inside the Cabin

The cabin sits at the end of the Rio Nido road and feels beautifully private, even with two neighboring cabins nearby. The moment we opened the door, it felt like stepping back in time.

Rustic tones, thoughtful touches, stained glass windows, and warm lighting fill every room with a cozy, unhurried atmosphere that is almost impossible to describe until you experience it yourself. My kids immediately declared it had full Harry Potter energy.

The layout: Two bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs, plus a master bedroom upstairs with a private patio and a hot tub surrounded by tall pine trees. A truly magical soak with complete privacy.

🛁 Do Not Miss the Bathroom

A stone soaking tub with a seating area that feels like an outdoor shower experience. It is one of those touches that makes the whole stay feel extra special.

As beautiful, cozy, and comfortable as the cabin is, there is so much to explore just outside the door. Do not miss the surrounding state parks, beaches, and stops along the Russian River.

What to Do Nearby

The Raven Haus is the kind of base camp that makes everything around it feel accessible and unhurried. Here is everything we loved within easy reach of the cabin.

Nature: The Russian River

The Russian River is practically on your doorstep from the cabin, and it is one of those places that asks nothing of you except to slow down and enjoy it. Whether you want to wade in, kayak along the current, or simply sit on the bank and listen to the water, this river has a calming presence that is hard to find anywhere else in Northern California.

Best time to visit: Summer months bring warm water perfect for swimming. Spring offers beautiful green surroundings and a faster-moving current that is ideal for a peaceful float.

Hike: Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

Just a short drive from Guerneville, Armstrong Redwoods is one of the most awe-inspiring places in all of Northern California. Walking among ancient coastal redwoods, some over a thousand years old and hundreds of feet tall, is one of those experiences that genuinely puts life in perspective.

The trails here are well-maintained and range from easy flat walks to longer routes deeper into the forest, making it perfect for families with kids of any age. The canopy is so thick that even on a warm day the forest feels cool, quiet, and almost cathedral-like.

🌲 Good to Know

Go early in the morning for the best light filtering through the trees and to beat the crowds. The reserve opens at sunrise, and those first couple of hours are something truly special.

Sweet Stop: Chile Pies Bakery

Do not drive past this place without stopping. Chile Pies Bakery is a beloved local spot that does exactly what the name promises: sweet, flaky, perfectly made pies with a subtle kick. Pick something up for the drive or bring a whole pie back to the cabin for the evening.

Coastal Wonder: Bodega Head

A short drive brings you to one of the most dramatic coastal viewpoints in the region. Bodega Head juts out into the Pacific and offers sweeping, unobstructed views of the ocean in every direction. It is one of the best spots on the Northern California coast for whale watching, particularly during the gray whale migration season from December through April.

🐋 Whale Watching Tips

Bring binoculars and look for spouts in the water. The whales pass relatively close to shore here, and sightings are genuinely common during peak migration.

State Park: Sonoma Coast State Park

Stretching over 16 miles of dramatic Pacific coastline, Sonoma Coast State Park is one of the most beautiful and undervisited state parks in California. Rocky headlands, hidden coves, sandy beaches, and crashing waves make every stop along the park feel like its own discovery.

Beach Walk: Johnson's Beach

Located right in the heart of Guerneville along the Russian River, Johnson's Beach is a beloved local gathering spot with a relaxed, friendly energy. It is a wonderful place for a leisurely walk, a picnic, or letting the kids splash around at the water's edge. In the summer months, kayak and canoe rentals are available right on site.

Favorite Hike: Kortum Trail

This was one of our absolute favorites of the whole trip. The Kortum Trail runs along some of the most dramatic stretches of the Sonoma Coast and treats you to sweeping ocean views the entire way. What makes it extra special is the beach access, with steps carved down to the shore that lead to the most incredible tidepooling we have ever done.

🧀 Tidepool Tips

Check tide charts before you go and aim for low tide for the best tidepool access. Look for sea anemones, hermit crabs, starfish, and mussels clinging to the rocks.

Lunch with History: The Fishetarian

Fresh fish tacos, stunning views, and a connection to one of the most iconic films ever made. The Fishetarian is located in the town of Bodega Bay, and parts of Alfred Hitchcock's legendary film The Birds were filmed right in this very area.

Film history buff? Take a short drive through the town of Bodega after your meal and visit the Potter Schoolhouse, another iconic filming location from The Birds that still stands today.

If you have any questions about the cabin or any of the stops nearby, leave a comment or send me a message. I would love to help you plan your own trip.
